Sandra Ortega-Achury, Research Associate II, has been recognized in Colombia by the Universidad Surcolombiana, her former university, with the honor of “Outstanding Alumni”. This recognition is given to acknowledge her academic and professional achievements, a good part of them while being a member of the CEE Department at MSU.
Sandra Ortega-Achury, Research Associate II, received the 2018 Research Support Award from the Bagley College of Engineering. She received the award in a ceremony during the Annual Research Awards Banquet celebrated on April 16, 2018.
James Grafe, Graduate Research Assistant, was awarded third place at the Mississippi Water Resources Research Conference for his oral presentation “Understanding Relations Between Streamflow, Turbidity, and Suspended-Sediment Concentration in an Impaired Mississippian Stream”.
Phong Ly awarded first place in the in the Undergraduate Division of the 2018 EWRI Student Technical Paper Competition, for his paper on “Green Alternatives: Analysis of rain garden hydrology and water quality performance.” The award was presented at the 2018 World Environmental & Water Resources Congress (June 3-7, 2018), in Minneapolis, MN.
James Steele awarded second place in the Undergraduate Division of the 2018 EWRI Student Technical Paper Competition, for his paper on “Analyzing Suspended Sediment Transport in Catalpa Creek”. The award was presented at the 2018 World Environmental & Water Resources Congress (June 3-7, 2018), in Minneapolis, MN.
James Grafe, CEE Senior (graduated in fall 2017), won first place on the Thesis Research Competition at the Undergraduate Research Symposium celebrated at MSU. He presented an overview, significance and results of his undergraduate research topic “Catalpa Creek Suspended Sediments and Water Quality Monitoring”. The TRC is a competition that challenges undergraduate students to present a compelling verbal presentation of their undergraduate research topic and its significance in just three minutes. From the entire group of students that submitted their application, only twenty students were selected to compete. The competition was judged by a panel comprised of a diverse group of professionals (academic and non-academic) with a wide range of experience.
Senior Emily Farrar received the Harry Charles Simrall Award for Engineering Excellence, presented by Mississippi State University’s Association of Retired Faculty.

Emily Farrar, CEE Senior (graduated in spring 2017), awarded first place in the Undergraduate Division of the ASCE-EWRI 2016 Student Technical Paper Contest. Her paper titled “Water Quality Monitoring of the Catalpa Creek Watershed” summarized the results of her undergraduate research study and was presented at the 2016 EWRI World Environmental and Water Resources Congress in West Palm Beach, FL.

Senior Laura E. Wilson (graduated in spring 2016) received the Harry Charles Simrall Award for Engineering Excellence, presented by Mississippi State University’s Association of Retired Faculty
Chase Stogner, EE Senior (graduated spring 2015), awarded Second Place Oral Presentation at the MSU Undergraduate Research Symposium. His presentation titled “The Assessment of Techniques to Mitigate and Restore Fracking Pollution in Mississippi” summarized results of his undergraduate research study.
