Each year, EPA recognizes the latest accomplishments of landfill methane partners who have reduced emissions of methane and created renewable energy. The Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) acknowledges it’s Partners for excellence in innovation and creativity, success in promoting project development and achieving environmental and economic benefits. On January 18, 2012, partners accepted awards at EPA’s 15th Annual LMOP Conference and Project Expo in Baltimore, Maryland.
The Golden Triangle Regional Solid Waste Management Authority accepted a Project of the Year Award (one of three nationally) for their landfill gas collection, destruction and electricity generation project – Mississippi’s first landfill gas to electricity generation facility.
The Authority self developed the projects which annually capture and destroy over 30,000 metric tonns of Carbon Dioxide equivalent green house gasses. The electricity generation project generates 1 MW of reliable green energy, enough to power 600 homes, which is sold to the Tennessee Valley Authority thru the local power grid of 4-County Electric Power Association.
The Golden Triangle Regional Solid Waste Management Authority’s electricity generation facility is a renewable energy project in corporation with the Tennessee Valley Authority, 4 County Electric Power Association, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and the Mississippi Development Authority.
